Surely everyone out there, at some point, has had to move. Whether it’s for a new position at work, a new school or just for a change pace, packing up a lifetime’s worth of accumulation and heading out to a new place can be both an exciting and simultaneously daunting task.

Think about it. Even moving just across town can be a logistical nightmare. Items need to be lovingly packed and stored, trucks need to be ordered, blankets need to be secured to keep furniture from scratching and that’s not even counting the army of loyal friends or a handful of professional movers to help actually lift your material life from one location and put it in another. And that’s just residential.

Small wonder then that for the big moves, like those between countries or where the items being moved are more than just pants and shirts, entire teams of logistics professionals are needed to make the process as smooth as possible. These businesses exist to make large, complicated moves easier. They arrange pick up, transportation, temporary storage and eventual relocation into the new home. The best services also help the person moving with any necessary paperwork, domestic help or maintenance their new place might require. And in a process with so many steps, there is bound to be data.

A Global Logistics Company

GInter, one of Brazil’s largest logistics companies, makes the international moving process easier. Focusing on those moving from foreign countries to Brazil, GInter’s infrastructure is astronomical. They possess Brazil’s largest private fleet of moving trucks. An army of moving coordinators keeps their finger on the pulse of every move, ensuring that the other, equally large army of movers are in the right place at the right time to make sure items are packed up without a hitch. With over 60 locations and 300 employees all working together, GInter had a data problem that might sound familiar, even if you’re not in the business of moving people across oceans.

The problem with their data was that there was so much of it in so many different places they couldn’t get the big picture. What’s worse, they couldn’t figure out how to improve their performance without many months of expensive data analysis. And in a fast-paced company where much of a customer’s satisfaction depends on the efficiency and speed of their move not knowing the weak links in such a large chain can be disastrous.

That was the problem that Robson Granero, Executive Director of GInter, set out to solve. Granero states “We have a lot of different steps in our company, and it’s important for us to keep it all working on time and give the best for our clients.” While each step in the process generated streaming data, it wasn’t being gathered and analyzed efficiently.

Initially Granero decided that they would build their own data analysis tool to improve performance, but thought it wise to look to available systems before it was too late.  Granero says “we were developing new tools for our team to work on our company’s performance. In less than 6 months, we were using VisualCue.”

VisualCue for Logistics

Essentially, Granero saw a perfect fit between the long, complicated, data-heavy processes of his logistics company and VisualCue’s real-time, intuitive visualizations. More valuable to this large logistics company, however, was VisualCue’s ability to not only present the right information in an accessible way, but to gather all of that data into one screen.

According to Granero,

We have a lot of departments- VisualCue helps us integrate all the departments and have the same information throughout. Sometimes running reports you get different data- in using VisualCue we have one source of information so we can make a decision very fast.

We couldn’t have said it better ourselves. We’re big believers in  how important having all of the important information in front of you is for correct, fast decision making. A logistics company is a perfect example of this principle: each part of the business impacts another part, nothing lives in a vacuum. If you are attempting to improve the performance of your entire organization, it’s best to have all of the pieces in front of you so you can make the best decision fast.

Having all of the information in one place has certainly worked for GInter. According to Granero “VisualCue is part of our day to day activities. Our meetings have become more productive as we are always looking to improve the way we manage our activities.”

A Universal Data Solution

work_areaThe team at GInter was so happy with the improvements they were able to make to their main processes with VisualCue that they decided to see what other parts of their business could be improved.

According to Granero “we can see how our sales, customer service and financials are performing. It helps with management and tracking, and to see if we are just getting business or not… VisualCue takes information from three different systems and puts it all together in web-based format. It runs all the parameters and shows us our key performance indicators.”

At this point you might be thinking “but VisualCue doesn’t actually change the data, it just changes the way you look at it. How can that possibly make much of a difference?”

We asked Granero that question, and he shared with us that changing the way they looked at their data facilitated faster, more confident decision making which translated into real gains. This company alone has seen over $1.3 million in savings thanks to improved efficiency.

So what was the key, the magic bullet that led to such amazing results for GInter? Granero puts it best when he says

It’s important for us to have a complete view of the information and how we are serving our clients- we use VisualCue for workflow, showing us where we need to improve and where we are succeeding.

Data visualization gives GInter a competitive advantage by taking the guesswork out of decision making. VisualCue’s unique approach to visualization helped them focus immediately on where they needed to improve and make meaningful change quickly.

The next time you move think about all the steps in that process. Take that occasion to think about the processes in your own business, and how just changing the way you look at them could lead to huge improvements.

Until next time,
