In case you hadn’t noticed, a movie is coming out today and it seems like the entire world is getting excited about it- which is fine with us, it’s about time that everyone out there realized just how amazing the Star Wars universe really is. So naturally, we wanted to join in the celebration of our favorite sci-fi franchise.

And how does VisualCue celebrate anything? With data visualizations, of course!

Armed with these data visualizations you should be ready to tackle any trivia question while you’re waiting for the movie to start.

Who said what to whom?

The first one comes to us from Michael Friendly of York University who provides this visualization on his website.

Who knew Luke was so chatty.
Who knew Luke was so chatty.

Yes, what you’re looking at is a breakdown of all the dialogue in the original trilogy, showing not only which characters spoke with each other but what were their most common words and in which movie.

What we particularly love about this visualization is it’s ability to show us larger trends- like how much Threepio and Luke talked in the first vs. the second movie, or how generally little Leia seems to say at all. Luke looks downright chatty by comparison to Lando.

Looking at this diagram you can break down any characters dialogue choices, at least getting in the ballpark when someone asks you about a particularly obscure line of dialogue.

The only thing missing are R2’s various bleep-bloops, but we’ll let that slide.

Was that in the movies, or the books?

The thing we love about Star Wars is just how expansive the universe is. Even with recent changes there are plenty of movies, books, TV shows, video games and comic books to immerse yourself in.

But it can be tricky to keep all of those stories straight and figure out just what happened when.

This next visualization, courtesy of Marc Murera, infographic creator extraordinaire, comes to the rescue.

Empire Strikes Back like you've never seen it before
Empire Strikes Back like you’ve never seen it before

It is essentially an infographic breakdown of every key character and plot development from a wide range of the films, games and novels. For the first time in Star Wars history you can visit a single webpage and in less than five minutes get a detailed overview of the entire Star Wars story from the beginning to present day so you can nail any trivia question.

Now if you’ll excuse us, we have a movie to go see.
